Steps to delete company file in QuickBooks software

First, you need to open the QuickBooks company file you want to delete. You can do that by going to the File menu and clicking on Open Company or Restore Company.

Then, tap the option to Open a company file.

        After that, click Next.

Then, once you've chosen the file you want to delete, you should click Open.

The next step is to press the F2 key on your computer and then look at the file location in the Product Information window. (The path to the File on your computer where your company is kept is the file location.) The screen should show something like C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Documents/Intuit/QuickBooks/Company Files.

The last thing to do is to close QuickBooks.

To do that, go to File and then choose Exit.

Now, find the place you saw in the Product Information Window.

Here, you should right-click the company file you want to get rid of and then hit the Delete button. (The file should have the green QuickBooks icon shown here, but you should also delete all other files with the same file name that end in. qbw:)

Open QuickBooks again, and then choose "Edit List" from the menu.

Check the "Hide" box next to the file you just got rid of. Now, the File needs to be deleted and hidden from the No Company Open window.

The Company File folder can be found under Documents > Intuit > QuickBooks.

Choose your company file from this folder.

Remove the file(s) associated with the disc image for the same company file you just deleted. (It should end with the.dmg extension.) As a back-up, these are copies of the company file. Unless you turn off auto-backup in the options, each time you use QuickBooks Mac, it creates a backup copy (image) automatically.

The file you deleted is now in your recycle bin. To get rid of it for good, you need to either empty it or open it.

Deleting Company file in QuickBooks Online

If you want to get rid of a company file that was made in the last 60 days, you can delete all the information in it and start over from scratch. If your account has been set up for more than 60 days, you must cancel your current company and make a new one to start over.

Follow these steps to finish the process on QBO for a company that has less than 60 days left:

Sign into your QuickBooks Online account and change the URL to include /purgecompany. This is the first step.

As an example: If the URL is https://qbo.intuit.com/c28/app/homepage

Then you need to change it to: https://qbo.intuit.com/c28/app/purgecompany

After that, the next screen will show a list of the things that are being deleted. You must type "Yes" and then click "Ok" to show that you agree that the data can be deleted.

You can change the company you want to choose if it's not the one that's shown. Also, let the system know if you want it to set up accounts for you based on your company or whether you want it to build a blank chart of accounts at this point. Once you've made all of your choices, click Wipe Data. After you delete a file, you will be taken to your home page.
